Annisul Huq
Annisul Huq, the founder of ‘Mohammadi Group’ and first Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), was born in Noakhali, Bangladesh on 27 September 1952. He obtained his SSC from Dinajpur Zilla School in 1970. He completed his Honors from the University of Rajshahi and Masters from the University of Chittagong. He was the eldest son of Shariful Huq and Rowshan Ara Huq.
Starting his career with Desh Garments, Huq soon set up ‘Mohammadi Group’ in 1985 which is now one of the leading conglomerates in Bangladesh. He was also prominent for his outstanding television anchoring in the 80s. He also became the President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) for two consecutive terms in 2005 and 2006. Huq was relentless in working in favor of gaining duty-free export both in America & Europe.
In 2008, he became elected as the President of the Federation of the Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), the apex trade body of the country. His footprint crossed the national border in 2010 when he was nominated and he served as the President of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the apex trade body of South Asia. He worked towards the augmentation of bilateral investment, the development of new entrepreneurs, the alleviation of poverty and the empowerment of women engaging with this alliance.
He was also the President of Bangladesh Independent Power Producers Association (BIPPA), the key trade association for Independent Power Producers of Bangladesh.
Responding to the call of Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, feeling the woes of city dwellers, Huq consented to fight for the election of Mayorship of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC). In 2015, he was elected the Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) after he had been nominated by Bangladesh Awami League. He endeavored to change the Dhaka city from the very first day of his journey. Some of his remarkable initiatives include removal of unwanted bill-boards, wiping out illegal track parking at Tejgaon area, implanting 52 secondary stations (STS) to curb pollution, freeing 52 acres land at Gabtoli, planting 5 lac tree plants to make Dhaka green, establishing public lavatories, installing surplus amount of LED lights and CCTVs and implementing U-turn & U-loop projects etc. During his visit to London, Huq was diagnosed suffering from Cerebral Vasculitis and he was subsequently treated at the Wellington Hospital in England. He breathed his last on 30 November 2017, leaving a trail of grieg behind. He left behind his wife, Dr. Rubana Huq, and three children Navidul Huq, Wamiq Umaira, Tanisha Huq. Annisul Huq will always be remembered for his uncompromising zeal and dedication to bring positive changes to Dhaka.
